Want to improve your singing from the comfort of home? These five practical and fun tips will help you build confidence, develop your technique, and enjoy the process of mastering your voice. Let’s dive in!

Tip 1: Vocalize Freely

The best way to improve your voice is by making all kinds of sounds. Don’t worry about being perfect—this is your time to explore! Test your overall range (highest and lowest notes) and try out different voice qualities like “whiny” or “dopey.”

For a fun exercise:

  • Cry like a baby high in your range.
  • Drop into a deep Santa Claus voice low in your range.
  • Bonus: See if you can connect your high and low range in one big slide called a “Vocal Siren!”

Notice how these feel and sound different. Building this vocal awareness is key to improving your control and expression as a singer. (Spoiler: These sounds will come in handy later!)

Tip 2: Master the Lip Trill

One of the best exercises to improve your singing technique is the lip trill. Some call it the lip bubble, others a “buzz” or “raspberries,” but the goal is the same: put your lips together and blow, ideally with some sound or pitch behind it.

Why lip trills? They mimic what your vocal cords do inside your larynx—vibrate thousands of times per second. If you can’t sustain a lip trill, it’s a sign you may need to work on breath support.

How to Practice Lip Trills:

  1. Aim to sustain your trill for 5-10 seconds.
  2. Place your hands on the widest part of your rib cage. Hold it out gently (as if holding your breath) to help maintain your structure.
  3. Practice a steady flow of air without letting your body collapse too quickly.

With consistent practice, you’ll strengthen both your breath control and vocal stamina.

Tip 3: Take a Deep Breath

Notice I didn’t say “big breath.” Bigger isn’t always better! Many new singers accidentally release too much air before they even start singing. Instead, focus on feeling your breath.

Here’s how:

  • Place a hand on your belly button and notice if your lower abdomen expands outward when you breathe in. (If it doesn’t, you’re likely taking shallow chest breaths.)
  • Try lying down with your hand on your belly and breathing naturally. After a few breaths, you should feel your hand rise and fall.
  • For a quick reset, do a minute of jumping jacks, then relax and observe how your body naturally takes in air.

Breathing should feel like a full-body experience, involving your back, sides, and front. Practicing this kind of breath awareness will improve your singing foundation.

Tip 4: Find Songs You Love to Sing

Now that you’ve explored your range and worked on breathing, it’s time to put it all into practice! Start with songs that feel comfortable for your voice—ones that don’t make you push or strain.

Ideal Beginner Songs:

  • Female Voices: “Breathe (2AM)” by Anna Nalick or “Delicate” by Taylor Swift.
  • Male Voices: “Yesterday” by The Beatles or “Big Black Car” by Gregory Alan Isakov.

Tips for Choosing Songs:

  • Stick with songs in your vocal range. If you’re a male/low voice, sing songs by other male singers. If you’re a female/high voice, do the same.
  • Avoid overly challenging pieces (for now). Focus on songs you enjoy and know well.

Practice doesn’t have to be perfect—it just needs to be fun and engaging!

Tip 5: Be Kind to Yourself

Singing is hard because your voice is unique to you—no one else has your instrument! Unlike other instruments, you can’t replace a string or tweak the setup. Your voice is part of you, which makes it both rewarding and challenging.

Remember:

  • Progress takes time, and that’s okay. Celebrate small wins.
  • Your voice will feel different day to day. Work with what it’s offering in the moment.
  • Self-compassion is key to long-term growth as a singer.

If you ever feel stuck or want extra guidance, I’m just a lesson away. Let’s keep singing together!

Conclusion:

Practicing at home doesn’t have to be complicated. With these five tips, you’ll build confidence, refine your technique, and discover the joy of singing. Ready to take your skills to the next level? Book a lesson with me today!
