A ‘piano’ is an acoustic instrument (doesn’t need electricity to make sound) whereas a ‘keyboard’ is an electric instrument and needs to be plugged in and sound is produced through speakers. Pianos are often more expensive, heavier, and need to be tuned regularly, but keyboards are much easier to travel with and come in more shapes and sizes. This makes keyboards a great thing for beginning piano players to purchase when starting lessons.

No music theory knowledge is required, but if interested, your teacher can assist you with sight reading sheet music, lead sheets, and more.
