Q&A with Guitar Teacher Garrett!
Well, first and foremost… great choice! The guitar is the best instrument. Period. No contest. It is no surprise to me at all that you want to learn how to play this thing. I would argue that the guitar is unique in that it offers you technical capabilities as a musician that most other instruments simply don’t have (ie bending, sliding, hammer-ons, pull-offs, detuning, harmonics, muting, etc) -therefore the guitar is truly a beautiful and mysterious medium that musicians have been using to achieve radically different sounds for generations (look at Phil Keaggy vs Tom Morello, Duane Allman vs Eddie Van Halen, Taylor Swift vs Bob Dylan…)
With all that in mind, you must be patient with yourself. While the guitar can offer you limitless avenues for unique expression, likewise it is not very straightforward to learn. It will feel like one step forward and two steps back for a while in the beginning.
BUT-what did you expect!? It’s the BEST instrument with the MOST to offer after all-it isn’t going to come overnight-and that’s okay. Just trust the process and learn all that you can-before long you too will come to have a unique voice on the instrument.
That’s tricky-I cut my teeth learning Guns N’ Roses and RHCP…so my answer would’ve been classic/alternative rock for the longest time. Then Indie Rock and Jazz through college… The one genre I’ve neglected up till now is Country. Since playing on Broadway I’ve seen how great live Country music can be. I spend most of my practice time nowadays learning Country guitar solos and improvising in a Country style.
My favorite thing to practice right now is improvising over the solo section from “Folsom Prison Blues” by Johnny Cash. It’s a chicken pickin’ gold mine!!
Songwriting wise I will always be a sucker for good Indie Folk. My favorite songs to sing are “For Emma” by Bon Iver and “Two Headed Boy Pt. 2” by Neutral Milk Hotel.
